A Comprehensive Guide to Kitchen Appliances: Pros, Cons, and Integration

When it comes to buying kitchen appliances, it’s essential to have a clear understanding of the different styles and their pros and cons. In this blog post, we’ll cover the key points you should consider before making a purchase, including insights that appliance store sales reps may not mention. By consulting your kitchen designer before finalizing your appliance choices, you can ensure they align with your kitchen layout and design.

Ovens & Stoves:

Selecting the right oven depends on your cooking preferences and the purpose of your kitchen renovation. There are three main types to consider: oven towers, under-bench ovens (UBOs), and stoves. Oven towers offer functionality and a visually pleasing look, allowing for a double oven setup and additional storage space. UBOs are a great option if you primarily use your hotplate and microwave. Stoves, combining an oven and hotplate in one unit, are a cost-effective choice, particularly for 900mm wide setups.

Hotplates:

If you’re considering an induction hotplate, consult a qualified electrician to ensure your home has enough power capacity. Induction hotplates require a minimum of 15 amps and may require an electrical upgrade. Gas and electric hotplates offer different advantages based on personal preference and the availability of gas or power connections.

Range Hoods:

There are two main types of range hoods: canopy and under-mount. Canopy range hoods provide an aesthetic appeal but come at a higher cost due to design elements like stainless steel and glass features. Under-mount range hoods are more affordable and offer the advantage of being hidden behind a cabinet, reducing noise. Consider the noise level when selecting a range hood, as higher-end models tend to be quieter.

Sinks:

The choice of sink depends on whether you plan to have a dishwasher. If you opt for a dishwasher, a single or 1 ¼ sink will suffice, maximizing your bench space. Under-mount sinks offer a sleek look and are less prone to mold buildup. However, avoid connecting a drainer to an under-mount sink, as it can lead to unsightly mold growth. Top-mount sinks are more affordable and come with a drainer for drying dishes but may require regular cleaning to prevent mold.

Butler Sinks:

For a farmhouse-style kitchen, a Butler sink is a popular choice. These ceramic sinks provide ample space and enhance the farmhouse aesthetic. They can be installed as under-mount or sit-up sinks, depending on your preference. Ensure the back of the sink is painted if it sits above the benchtop level, as the unpainted surface will be visible if there is a window behind it.

Dishwashers:

Installing a dishwasher is highly recommended due to their efficiency in water and power usage. Dishwasher drawers offer flexibility with half-wash options and easier access, but they come at a higher cost and may require the removal of the kickboard. Standard dishwashers are more affordable but require more effort to access dishes. Consider integrated or flush-fitting dishwashers for a seamless look that aligns with your cabinetry.

Fridges:

Standard fridges that are not integrated often have doors that protrude past the fridge carcass, which can obstruct nearby drawers. Ensure you have enough space around the fridge to avoid limitations in opening the fridge door fully. Check whether the fridge will fit through the doors of your home before making a purchase.

Kitchen and Integrating Appliances:

Integrating appliances provide a seamless look in your kitchen, but they sacrifice ventilation and may require additional engineering for proper functioning. Ventilation systems must be carefully designed to allow the integrated appliance to circulate fresh air. Keep in mind that integrating appliances come at a higher cost due to the required ventilation engineering and the need for matching cabinetry.

Before purchasing any appliances, consult with your kitchen designer to ensure they fit your kitchen design and meet your specific requirements.
